GINGERBREAD MAN COSTUME

gingerbread man costume

Shrek's Gingy character brings the cool back to being a cookie!

Since the Dreamworks Shrek movies, many have fallen in love with Gingy the Gingerbread Man.  He is funny, loveable, and one tough cookie!  Gingy would make a great addition to a group Shrek themed set of costumes.  A Shrek, Fiona, Puss, Donkey, and Gingy group would be hilarious!  Or another idea would be to have several friends all dress in gingerbread man costumes and go as a set of cookies.  Too cute.

gingerbread man costumeThe kids also love to dress in the gingerbread man costume, its an easy one to make if you have some sewing skills.  Since it is really a simple pattern, you wouldn't really need to purchase one unless you just really wanted to get it perfect.  If you can sew a pillow case you should be able to sew the gingerbread man costume without much help.  McCall's offers a baby/toddler size pattern if you are thinking of dressing the baby as a gingerbread man, pattern number 8999 will give you four options in one package.  Getting the front decorations perfect isn't necessary.  When did you ever bake a cookie and have it come out perfect?  There are lots of items you could use to make the front decorations.  As in the picture to the right, you could simply use some fabric paint and paint all the stitches, buttons, eyes, and mouth onto the costume.  Or you could use some white pipecleaners and a little hot glue to put the stitches, and eyes on.  Some purple dots of felt, also attached with a glue gun would give the cookie decorations more definition and depth.  You will need to figure out the eye hole situation.  In this version of the costume you would look through a black mesh covering the mouth of the gingerbread man.  Another point to think about is the hands.  While you don't want a very elaborate outfit, you will need the use of your hands so maybe brown mittens or something similar in design would work.  A fold over flap could be helpful as well.

Of course if you don't have the time or skill set to make a gingerbread man costume, you can purchase one in either child or adult sizes on Amazon.com.  Depending on the size you need and the detail of the costume, the prices will generally range between $30 and $90.

gingerbread man costumeCheck out Al Roker of the Today show dressed as the gingerbread man.  His costume was very elaborate and not based on the Shrek character of Gingy, but still quite the nice showing.  I guess if you are going to be on national morning television you have to bring out all the stops.  Al is sporting the ever popular blue satin jacket with multi-colored gum drop buttons.  He even has the gingerbread man shoes.  Although I've never seen a gingerbread man with shoes, Al is able to pull it off quite nicely.  I would have liked to see a bit more of a gingerbread man makeup job for his face, he looks a little weird with just the eyebrows.  I think maybe he needed white eyebrows with a pronounced red mouth, but maybe he thought that would have been too much.  You have to think of the viewers you know.

Here's a great video of Gingy the Gingerbread Man from the Shrek movies, enjoy!
