Thing 1 and Thing 2 are the twin mischief markers who accompany the Cat, in The Cat in the Hat. They warble their own indecipherable language and literally leap from one catastrophic fun making adventure toThing 1 and Thing 2 Costumes another. The Things have been a very popular choice in Halloween costumes for twins, siblings, friends, and couples.

The first Cat in the Hat book features Thing 1 and Thing 2. The Cat brings a cheerful form of chaos to a house of two young children one rainy day while their mother leaves them unattended. Cat in the Hat brings with him two creatures names Thing 1 and Thing 2, while there the Cat preforms all sorts of wacky tricks to keep the children amused. The Cats tricks are greatly opposed by the family pet goldfish. The children's names are Sally and her older brother who serves as the narrator of the story who eventually capture the Things and the Cat under control. To make up for the chaos the Cat has caused he cleans up the house on his way out disappearing moments before the mother arrives back home.

Since then the Things have been very popular characters in the Cat in the Hat book and movie, and they have been used for many costumes for people of all ages.

Make the CostumesThing 1 and Thing 2 Costumes

The Thing 1 and Thing 2 Halloween Costumes are made exactly the same way with the exception of the number that is written in the circle of the Thing. Materials needed are:

  • Red Sweat shirts no hoods
  • Red Sweat pants
  • Adult sized red socks big enough to fit over shoes
  • Red Gloves
  • White and black fabric paint (paintbrush)
  • Hair gel/ Temporary blue hair spray or a blue wig
  • black lip stick and white face paint
Step by step instructions on how to create the costumes:Thing 1 and Thing 2 Costumes
  1. Take the red sweat shirts and put card board inside of them to prevent paint from seeping through to the other side. Paint white circles on the front of the shirts just like in the pictures of the Things. (White Circles can be outline first with pencil to insure accuracy.)
  2. Once dry outline the circle with black paint, and write in Thing 1 and Thing 2 in the separate shirts.( Use a pencil and stencils to write out on the white circle before painting it to ensure accuracy.)
  3. Fabric can also be used as a substitute for the pant.
  4. Once dried you use the rest of the materials to assemble your costume.
