Ugly Betty is one of ABC's sitcom hits.  America Ferrara is Ugly Betty.  A character based on a Columbian television novel by Fernando Gaitan.  Betty works at Mode a high fashion magazine where her sense of style is not exactly hip or welcome.  Betty's great personality wins over the pretentious regulars of the Mode enterage.  As a Halloween costume, Ugly Betty is quite easy to accomplish.  You can buy an Ugly Betty costume accessory kit that comes with a wig, glasses, and teeth with braces.

For most of the costume, you can just make a trip to your local vintage store or Goodwill outlet to find some very brightly colored and quite frankly mismatched prints to work into the costume. The biggest hard to find item will be the blue braces.  While some companies offer fake braces, very few will be blue.  You can try to add some blue color with food coloring but be careful not to dye the teeth.  Use a toothpick to try a spot on the back of the fake braces to ensure if it will work on your fakes before you go all out.  Billy Bob Fools All are probably the best costume marketed fakes, you can find them at Amazon.com or other Halloween related websites. 

The other big item is Betty's initial necklace.  This is easy enough to fabricate.  All you need is a pearl necklace and a big gold plated "B".  Simply attach the "B" with a small jump ring found at any craft store in the beading section.  You can probably find the "B" there as well for just a couple of dollars.

If you prefer to purchase your costume items, there are dozens of websites dedicated to almost any Halloween costume theme.  Ugly Betty costumes are very popular with the hit show gaining in popularity.  It has become a regular Thursday night edition for many viewers. 

The Ugly Betty costume is one that with little preparation or a quick internet search you could keep this one in the closet for a quick costume that you could use for many occasions.  Amazon.com offers the teeth with braces, glasses, wig, and even the Ugly Betty poncho.  A pair of ugly shoes and jeans and you'd be ready to hit the party.
